Calgary is the largest city in the province of Alberta and one of Canada’s fastest-growing urban centers, with a population of 1,306,784. Located in southern Alberta near the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, the city developed from a North-West Mounted Police post established in 1875. Calgary expanded rapidly in the early 20th century with the growth of the ranching and oil industries, becoming a major center of Canada’s energy sector.

The city gained international recognition when it hosted the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, an event that significantly enhanced its global profile and infrastructure. Calgary combines a modern skyline with historic districts and cultural landmarks. Notable sites include Stephen Avenue, a historic pedestrian street in downtown; the contemporary Peace Bridge, spanning the Bow River; and Lougheed House, a restored sandstone mansion reflecting the city’s early prosperity.

Calgary has produced several notable figures, including actress Elisha Cuthbert and computer scientist James Gosling, known as the creator of the Java programming language.
