Dresden is the capital of the German federal state of Saxony and has a population of 566,222 inhabitants. Located on the River Elbe in eastern Germany, it has been an important cultural, political, and economic center for centuries. Dresden rose to prominence in the 18th century as the residence of the Saxon electors and kings of Poland, earning the nickname “Florence on the Elbe” for its Baroque architecture and rich artistic life.
Much of the historic city was destroyed during Allied bombings in February 1945, but extensive reconstruction in the postwar period restored many of its most significant monuments. Notable landmarks include the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger Palace, the Semper Opera House, and Dresden Castle. Today, Dresden is also a center for science and high-tech industries, particularly microelectronics.
The city is the birthplace of several notable figures, including the writer Erich Kästner and Volker Braun.
