Málaga has a population of approximately 602,000 inhabitants (2026 estimate). Located in the autonomous community of Andalusia on Spain’s southern Mediterranean coast, it is one of the country’s oldest cities and a major center of tourism and commerce on the Costa del Sol. Founded by the Phoenicians around the 8th century BCE, Málaga later became an important Roman municipium and subsequently flourished under Moorish rule. It was incorporated into the Crown of Castile in 1487 during the Reconquista.
The city is known for its rich architectural and cultural heritage, including the Alcazaba fortress, the Roman Theatre, and the Renaissance-style Málaga Cathedral. Its port remains one of the busiest in southern Spain. Málaga is also internationally recognized as the birthplace of painter Pablo Picasso and actor Antonio Banderas, both of whom have contributed significantly to global art and cinema.
