Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba, Canada. It has a population of 749,607 and is located near the geographic centre of North America, at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. The area has long been an important meeting place for Indigenous peoples, particularly the Anishinaabe, Cree, and Métis. Winnipeg developed as a major transportation and trading hub in the late 19th century following the arrival of the railway and was incorporated as a city in 1873.

The city is known for its cultural institutions and historic landmarks. The Manitoba Legislative Building, completed in 1920, is a prominent example of neoclassical architecture. Saint Boniface Cathedral reflects Winnipeg’s strong Francophone heritage, while the Winnipeg Art Gallery houses an internationally significant collection of Inuit art. Winnipeg also has a notable presence in science and the arts. Nobel Prize–winning physicist Jim Peebles and Academy Award–winning actress Anna Paquin were both born in the city. Today, Winnipeg is recognized for its diverse population, vibrant arts scene, and role as an economic and cultural centre of the Canadian Prairies.
