Population Density Calculator

Use this tool to calculate the population density in people per km² or per square mile.

Population Density Definition

Population density measures how many people live in a given area. It is usually expressed as people per square kilometer (km²) or people per square mile (mi²). This metric helps compare how crowded cities, regions, or countries are, regardless of their total population.

For example, a city with 1 million people may feel very different depending on whether those residents live within 100 km² or 1,000 km². Population density allows meaningful comparisons between places of different sizes.

How to Calculate Population Density

The formula is simple:

Population Density = Total Population ÷ Land Area

If a city has 2,000,000 inhabitants and 500 km² of land area, its density is:

2,000,000 ÷ 500 = 4,000 people per km²

This calculator automatically performs the calculation and allows you to convert results between square kilometers and square miles.

Why Population Density Matters

Population density affects:

  • Urban planning
  • Housing demand
  • Transportation systems
  • Infrastructure costs
  • Environmental impact
  • Quality of life

Highly dense cities like major metropolitan areas often have efficient public transport and compact development. Lower-density regions may offer more space but require longer travel distances.
